GEOMETRIX MARQUETRY IN DETAIL
Made up of four quadrants of six triangles that alternate in colour, backgammon is a game of perfect geometry. Taking inspiration from the iconic Majolica tiles of the acclaimed Italian architect Gio Ponti, Alexandra’s original artwork for the playing surface reflects on the nature of geometry itself by playing with tessellated abstract shapes – one of the seven key elements of art.
Alexandra’s marquetry artist precision cuts the sustainable wood veneers into hundreds of precise shapes before individually assembling them on the board, bringing the geometric design to vibrant life. To prepare the board for a lifetime of play, an expert in hand-lacquering seamlessly seals the board for a full-grain satin finish.
The Geometrix backgammon set passes through the hands of nine different workshops in the UK, including a master joiner, a leather artist and a specialist in hand-lacquering. Presented with semi-precious playing pieces, calming turquoise, symbolic of friendship, and tiger’s eye, which promotes harmony and balance, the board is housed in a dramatically striped satin walnut box and finished with polished brass hinges.
Two varieties of wood are inlaid by the marquetry artist on the playing surface, hand-picked by Alexandra for their inherent qualities. In light shades of denim, the distinctive grains and lustres of the blue tulipwood and bird’s eye maple accentuate the beautiful contrast of textures between the different woods.
