Our Impact

As a purpose-led luxury brand, we are committed to making a meaningful contribution to the world we inhabit. Our approach to sustainability is rooted in craftsmanship, respect for materials and a commitment to learning, always questioning how we can do better—and leave less behind.

RESPONSIBLY MADE

Since founding the business in 2010, Alexandra’s passion for quality and craftsmanship has shaped every design we create. As a small, independent brand, we believe in the joy of human connection through play, and in the value of making with care, using responsibly sourced materials and collaborating with local workshops wherever possible.

Each piece is made-to-order, crafted in limited runs, and infused with its own character. We take great pride in creating games and commissions that are unlike anything else in the world. Our approach is built on close, long-term relationships with UK artisans and material specialists, combining a deep respect for tradition with a continual pursuit of new ideas and innovation.

AN ONGOING COMMITMENT

Sustainability is embedded in our culture at Alexandra Llewellyn. In the video above, Alexandra explains how it underpins everything we do. From the sourcing of our materials to the games we create, our products, which are either made to order or in very limited runs, are inherently sustainable.

HUMAN TOUCH

We collaborate closely with some of the finest British craftspeople, each bringing specialist skills and a shared commitment to sustainable making. These long-standing relationships foster innovation, creativity and uncompromising quality. Every maker is known to us personally—their work is intricate, distinctive and made to be treasured for generations.

ARTISANAL EXPERTISE

The techniques behind Alexandra’s designs are grounded in centuries of tradition. We work with a trusted network of UK-based artisans, from marquetry specialists and master joiners to a leather artist and hand-lacquering expert, who lend their time-honoured skills to every piece. Their craftsmanship not only brings our designs into being but helps preserve these remarkable disciplines for generations to come.

QUALITY MATERIALS

We are meticulous in our sourcing. Every material we use, from woods and metals to stones and leather, is certified and carefully selected for its quality and provenance. Thanks to close, long-standing relationships with our suppliers, we can trace each piece of wood back to its original source—a numbered tree. Many of our timbers, including the distinctive London Oak, are sourced locally within Europe.

CRAFTING A BETTER FUTURE

Wherever possible, we choose natural, water-based finishes and sustainably sourced leathers, tanned locally and treated with minimal chemicals. We also work exclusively with UK-based workshops that specialise in recycled and recyclable materials for all our packaging.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

We’re committed to supporting the communities connected to the materials we use. In a recent collaboration with the Turquoise Mountain Foundation in Afghanistan, we created a series of semi-precious playing pieces, handcrafted from locally sourced stones. The project helped sustain artisanal skills and contributed directly to the livelihoods of those who made them.

THE CIRCULAR WAY

We take pride in the longevity of our creations. Through our circular care offering, our artisans can lovingly restore and refurbish your Alexandra Llewellyn design, extending its life and preserving its beauty for years to come.

I am delighted to support the amazing work of charities I have long admired —explore some of my recent partnerships below.

BLUE MARINE FOUNDATION

This one-of-a-kind board honours the tireless work undertaken by The Blue Marine Foundation to protect our seas. Displaying Alexandra’s signature tongue-in-cheek humour, a seahorse, seal, oyster, shark and lobster have migrated from warmer seas to hide out in the cold depths of Britain’s kelp forests. All proceeds support Blue Marine’s ongoing work to restore the ocean to health.

WILDAID

Alexandra collaborated with fashion and nature photographer Kristian Schmidt on a bespoke backgammon board to support WildAid, a charity working to protect wildlife and vital habitats from critical threats. The board showcases Kristian’s whale shark photo series, alongside ethereal women. Each playing piece is engraved with names of the world’s most endangered species in English and Latin.

TERRENCE HIGGINS TRUST

Alexandra’s Calla lily backgammon board was created in collaboration with the Terrence Higgins Trust. The UK’s leading HIV and sexual health charity, Alexandra chose the Calla lily, an ancient fertility symbol, as a fitting tribute to their vital work. Crafted in Macassar ebony wood and a limited edition of 10, 20% of every sale is donated to the trust.
