I visited Mexico when I was 17 and the untamed beauty of the desert has always remained with me. It is my dream to visit the American Wild West, so I designed the backgammon set that I would take with me.
A darkly beautiful tribute to the birthplace of Americana, Alexandra’s beguiling design features three species of snake alongside succulent cacti and a playful monkey crouching in the corner, contemplating how he stumbled upon this unfamiliar terrain.
A wood marquetry expert precision-cuts the different woods into miniature pieces, using the hot sand shading technique to lightly scorch the wood to mimic the flame-like patterning of a python. Each piece is then assembled by hand upon the board, bringing the spiny prickles of the cacti, the delicate petals of a flower and the monkey’s friendly face to life.
Five different woods, including Walnut Burr, Laurel Burr and Bubinga, are used in the creation of our Snake backgammon board, selected for the quality of their grain and how well they interpret the colours, shading and depth of Alexandra’s design.
