Created to showcase at the 2024 Homo Faber exhibition presented by the Michelangelo Foundation, the Reflecting marquetry backgammon set is inspired by the hypnotic qualities of Venice’s canals. Combining an ancient technique with a contemporary subject matter, Alexandra chose the different marquetry woods for their unique grains and the way the light reflects off them. This masterpiece draws you in with extraordinary depth and movement that skilfully captures the interplay of light on water.

As someone who has always been drawn to water – its mirror-like qualities and how it is in a constant state of flux – I relished the challenge of capturing its movement and energy in wood, a material that couldn’t be more different from its subject.

Featuring thousands of miniature slivers of wood, arranged to mimic the ebb and flow of water, the vibrant colours of the different woods bring a beautiful luminosity to the design.
Alexandra chose the different marquetry woods for their unique grains and the way the light reflects off them creating a marquetry surface, inlaid with sustainable sycamore, birds eye maple and various dyed woods and mother of pearl.
To complement the vivid hues of the wood marquetry, Alexandra chose turquoise and mother of pearl semi-precious stone playing pieces, with the contrasting shades of blue injecting even more colour into the design.
