THE BUTTERFLY TAKES FLIGHT

Rendered in contrasting sycamore and walnut burr woods, the perfectly symmetrical wings of a Malayan tree nymph butterfly spread across the entire board. The marquetry artist recreates the “trompe l’oeil” effect in Alexandra’s design using the hot sand shading technique, scorching the woods to bring a beautiful sense of three-dimensionality and lifelike volume to the butterfly’s wings.

Inlaid into the midnight-blue playing surface, chevron marquetry triangles alternate with black triangles that are designed to disappear behind the wings, adding to the illusion of depth.
