The Aztec board is a showcase of my love for wood marquetry. The tessellated nature of the design highlights the unique qualities of the different woods, juxtaposing not just the colours, but the grain directions and lustres too. As I continue to explore the possibilities of marquetry, the more I appreciate how the tiniest of details, like rotating a piece of wood just a few degrees, can have a profound effect on a design.

GEOMETRIC BEAUTY

 

Alexandra has a skill for combining woods to complement and enhance one another, using the different colours, lustres and grains to bring the block patterns to life upon the board. The layout of the board is more traditional, with tessellated marquetry triangles inlaid into a sleek, black poplar board, reducing distractions for the more serious player.

AN EYE FOR DETAIL

Choosing the woods and colours was central to the design, which comprises thousands of miniature pieces, individually inlaid by hand in alternate directions by a marquetry master. Much thought has gone into the position of every piece of wood to ensure the light catches it differently, creating a beautiful shimmering effect.

SEMI-PRECIOUS PLAYING PIECES

The Aztec backgammon set is presented with luxurious playing pieces, handcrafted from semi-precious stones. Alexandra personally chose the contrasting ornamental stones – Red Jasper and Black Obsidian – to complement the bold colours on the board.

A celebration of craftsmanship

The Aztec backgammon set is brought to life by artisans based in the UK who are highly skilled in time-honoured crafts, including a leather artist, master joiner and inlay expert. Finished with hand-applied gloss lacquer, the high-shine playing surface accentuates the rich colours, textures and grains of the different woods.

Engraving

Backgammon board box lids and Stone Playing Pieces can be personalised with laser-engraved initials, dates, or even a short message. You can request engraving during the online checkout process.
