Alexandra Lewellyn
London-based artist Tom Hammick is a colourist who uses landscapes as a metaphor to explore an imaginary and mythological dreamscape. Winner of the V&A Prize at the 2016 International Print Biennale, his depictions of isolated human dwellings grounded in dream-like settings are on display at the V&A and British Museum.
Equal measures artwork and backgammon set, the artist and the designer have created a work that inspires conversation and will bring people together for generations to come, inspired by the similarities between Hammick’s woodblock prints and Alexandra’s favourite technique of marquetry.
This artistic collaboration arose from conversations between the artist and the designer about the process of creativity and their mutual respect for the natural materials with which they work.
Translating Hammick’s “The Crossing” artwork in marquetry woods in myriad textures and colours, Alexandra chose walnut and Macassar Ebony wood to create the trees, which replace the traditional triangles on a backgammon board.
From the vibrant dwelling on the outer box to the wooden playing pieces created especially to accompany this limited-edition backgammon board, Alexandra chose the woods based on how faithfully they describe the rich colours of Hammick’s “The Crossing” artwork.
Extending all the way around the exterior of the box, the outer design features thousands of lapping waves, with each miniature piece of wood veneer inlaid by hand by an authority in the ancient technique of marquetry.
